NAMIBIA - THE TRUE AFRICAN ADVENTURE

This trail is not for the feint hearted nor 5 star accommodation travellers, but for those who want to experience Africa as it is without frills and mix with the people who live there and experience their daily lives (albeit with more comfort etc), first hand while you explore and soak up the natural beauty and harshness of  Namibia.

THE RIDE

DAY 1    Depart from Windhoek Airport ; travel overland to Okahandja where we will view African woodcarvings. Then we move on to Tsumeb where we will spend the night.

DAY 2    Overland to Ruacana, where we overnight at a Bush camp. Ruacana is our point of departure for Epupa Falls .

DAY 3,4,5,6     This is an 8-day horseback trail along the Kunene River from Ruacana to Epupa falls. We stay at Bush Camps each night.   We visit the local people in their native environments, especially the Himba who are semi-nomadic pastoralists. They seldom leave their home areas and maintain a tradition of their own, on which other cultures have made little impression. They are a tall statuesque people and the women are especially noted for their sculptured beauty. They rub their bodies with red ochre and fat, a treatment that protects their skins from the harsh desert climate. Men, women and children adorn themselves with necklaces, bracelets, anklets and belts made from iron and shell beads with unusual and striking designs.

DAY 7,8,9,10    After our stay at Epupa Falls we return to Ruacana via the Zebra Mountains . After a natural spring close to the Ondoto River , we cut back to the Kunene River and on to Ruacana.

DAY 11,12,13    Depart in the morning to Etosha national Park, one of the largest game reserves in Africa covering 22 270 km2. Consisting of saline desert, savannah and woodlands, its definitive feature is the Etosha Pan, a vast, shallow depression of approximately 5 000 km2. There are several rare and endangered species to be found in the park, such as black rhino and cheetah. Other large animals represented in the park are giraffe, blue wildebeest, Zebra, and Hyena. Lion, Cheetah and Leopard complete the trio of big cats. Etosha’s elephants are reputed to be of the largest in Africa . We will spend a night at all three of Etosha’s rest camps – Namutoni, Halali, and Okaukuejo respectively.

DAY 14    Back to Otjiwarongo, where we will collect any semi-precious stones bought on the way in, and on to Okahanja to collect our woodcarvings. From here we go back to Windhoek , where an amazing trail will end.
