HERMANUS - EVERYONES FAVOURITE PLACE

Voted one of the 12 best whale watching destinations in the world by the World Wildlife Fund.

This trail meanders along 22km of pristine coastline that is available all year round, encompassing both  mountain and beach, but from May to November each year, this area becomes a hub of activity with whales entering Walker Bay where they entrance onlookers with their playful antics.  De Kelders (Your first overnight spot), offers you a birds eyeview of the mothers and their calves as they spyhop and lobtail in the bay directly below you.  Of the 350 Southern Right whales that visit the Southern coast, at least 160 make Walker Bay their home.

INTERESTING: The whales take up to 8 weeks to swim 3000km at a leisurely speed of about 4 - 5 kph.

The ride continues and takes you into one of the worlds 6 floral kingdoms of which most of the fynbos is endemic not only to the area, but to South Africa.

Ride up into Flower Valley where the flowers are of such exceptional quality and beauty that they are exported all over the world.

FACT - The whale crier is the most photographed icon in South Africa next toNelson Mandela.

Hermanus appeals to the bird watchers as few other areas can offer fynbos, mountain, coastal, river and estuarine habitats in such compact terrain with such easy access.  Some birds that you will be able to see:  Orange breasted sunbird, Cape Sugarbird , Cape Siskin , Victorins Warbler, Southern Tchagra and the Protea seedeater (plus many more).
